Good morning from the FGS2011 Media Hub! I’m sitting in the exhibit hall at the Official Bloggers media hub with Randy Seaver and Lisa Alzo. Thomas MacEntee, Amy Coffin, and Caroline Pointer are hanging out here too.
This morning I sat in the opening session and heard David Ferriero speak from NARA. He told us a little about his family history which included a family bible passed down through his family. He laid his hand on that bible when he took the oath as archivist. When he told us that an “awwwwww” came out of the crowd. He also spoke about the work NARA does. He reminded us that 2 April 2012 is the release date for the 1940 U.S. Federal Census release online. Don’t forget it will be free!
David also told us that NARA has 11 blogs, 29 FaceBook pages, YouTube videos, they are also on Twitter and Flickr. I’m going to have to investigate this when I get home. I didn’t realize they had so much of an online presence.
A big announcement was the presentation of a check for $24,234.00 from the Indiana Genealogical Society for the War of 1812 Pension fund. How exciting! Curt Witcher told us that for every $1 donated, two records are digitized. So this is more than 48,000 records that will be digitized.
Stay tuned for more news as the day progresses! I’m off to walk around the exhibit hall a little and then probably attend the 11:00 session.
