Did your family or ancestors serve traditional dishes for the holidays? Was there one dish that was unusual?
My family served a fish dinner on Christmas Eve growing up. As an adult my family spends time with my aunt and uncle on Christmas Eve. My aunt prepares a fish dinner with several different appetizers and more dessert than anyone should eat. It is always so yummy.
My mom always baked butter cookies (cut out cookies) for us. We would help decorate them. Today I still do that and my boys do the decorating. Of course more of the candy topping ends up on the cookie sheet rather than the cookies sometimes. HA! My mom also made small fruit filled cookies and mistake cookies. You can find the recipe for the mistake cookies here from last year’s advent calendar.
For Christmas at my house this year we will probably have ham. If Uncle Tom comes over he’ll bring a lasagna as he usually does and White Castle burgers aka “Whities”. Everyone, but me, likes them. They are featured at every holiday, every birth, every marriage, every funeral. It is my in-laws family tradition.
Do you have any interesting family traditions that involve food like White Castle burgers?
